With Faith, Hope and Love in our hearts together we grow and flourish.

“A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.”

The National Curriculum

At Stoke Minster Primary Academy, we recognise that physical activity and sport are essential parts of a child’s everyday life and a key factor in their future well-being both physically and mentally. We strive for every child to find enjoyment in physical activity aiming to provide our children with a wide range of opportunities in the hope that by trying a good range of sports they discover the right kind of activity for themselves and experience the benefits that an active lifestyle can provide.

Due to the high number of disadvantaged children at Stoke Minster, through both curriculum delivery and enrichment activities, we aim to present children with opportunities to compete against themselves and others; work in partnerships and teams; build self-confidence and perseverance alongside the real sense of achievement that this particular aspect of a child’s education can provide. We believe that this is particularly pertinent for our children as many do not have the opportunity to pursue sporting activities outside of school. Our key aim is that we engage children’s enthusiasm and provide them with the necessary skills and experiences needed for them to be in the best position possible to engage in physical activity and sporting opportunities as their educational and life journey continues beyond Stoke Minster. We recognise that in providing the children with a high-quality PE education and enrichment programme we are preparing and supporting pupils towards healthy and active lifestyle choices for their future mental and physical well-being.

Stoke Minster is a diverse multi-cultural community with a large proportion of our children having English as an additional language, our PE curriculum is designed provide all of our children with clear models and demonstrations allowing for all children to access lessons and practise skills. There are also ample opportunities for collaborative working and team building in which children can develop their use of English though speaking and listening.

At Stoke Minster a broad and balanced curriculum within physical education is provided alongside opportunities for the children to play in festivals and to compete over a wide range of events. In doing so, we aim to teach the children to follow the conventions of fair play.

The aims of Physical Education (PE) at our school are that all children:

  • adopt an active lifestyle and understand the benefits it provides
  • develop a range of sporting skills across the national curriculum, including swimming, gymnastics, games, dance
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in a range of competitive sports and activities
  • develop a sense of fair play and a sporting attitude
  • enjoy sporting activities and have fun, developing resilience and perseverance
